A TRACE OF ROMANCE - Read on to Win Books!

5 Stars

Reviewed by Courtnee for Readers' Favorite

Ann Swann's characters are deep and many-sided. Once Trace enters the flower shop, reading the book is like listening in on a conversation between old flames. Though they've had other relationships, information about each other has reached them, and it's clear that Laynie's and Trace's thoughts aren't far from one another. Even though there's a significant attachment, it's hard to tell at first if the two will end up together. Swann tackles some difficult subjects in her story and her characters have overcome hardships and suffered tragedies. The book is short enough to read during a quiet afternoon, but the well-paced chapters can also be savored over a few days. A Trace of Romance is a good selection for readers who enjoy women's fiction and sweet, second-chance romances.

Ann Swann is one of my favorite authors, and I’ve enjoyed her work across multiple genres for years. Her latest release, A Trace of Romance, is a truly sweet and extremely touching romance.

I’m not a fan of romance novels with bare-chested men on the covers, but I am very much a fan of romance stories with well-developed characters who are relatable … flaws and all. Real people.

I won’t recap the general plot in any detail as one can easily read the blurb. Rather, I’d just like to expound a bit on why I loved this beautifully written novella. So many of us can relate to past loves that for one reason or another, didn’t fully form into lifetime relationships … or continue to form at all. Life happens for all of us, and things can swiftly change. Especially when tragedy is involved. We move on, but often, we don’t forget. This is what happened with Laynie and Trace, both from the town of Beach Way, Oregon, who always thought they’d be together.

What I loved about this story is that when Trace returns to Beach Way, and Laynie and he see one another again, their chemistry is strong. The past, which determined their present, still plays a role in their story.

Author Swann doesn’t give us romance in a corny or clichéd sense, but she handles this reunion and this mutual love beautifully, realistically, and in a way that I found immensely satisfying and lovely to read.

A Trace of Romance is a truly sweet and extremely touching romance. Immensely satisfying and lovely to read. A beautifully written, heartfelt love story with relatable, well-developed characters … flaws and all.

Laynie and Trace connected as kids in grade school and their feelings grew into more than friendship in high school. Tragedy strikes, causing Trace and his family to move away. Afterward, so much happens in Laynie's world when he's no longer around and it's the same for Trace. Their story will grab your heart, especially when years later Trace returns. All kinds of emotions surface for them both and so does an answer to the tragedy. The author put them through a lot -- love, loss, forgiveness, mystery, dealing with the past, dealing with the future, and hope. I rooted for them to get a second chance. There's a part of the story that brought me to tears. I truly enjoyed getting to know Laynie and Trace.

Excerpt:

Trace grabbed her in a bear hug, held on for a few moments, then turned her loose and swiped the pad of his thumb around the corner of his mouth. “Tiny marshmallows?”

Laynie laughed. “Yes, little one. I have tiny marshies. You know I do.” It felt as if they had regressed ten years, as if the black cloud of now had lifted and they’d been transported back to the days of their frantic youth when the two of them would run up and down the beach like wild things.

“Penny for your thoughts, Penny Lane?”

“Penny for my thoughts?” She smiled. “I’m thinking how I never could stay mad at you. Not when we were kids, and not now. No matter what you’ve done. Or didn’t do.” She brushed past him and went to the kitchen for another cup of cocoa. The mood was too intense. Her footing as uncertain as dry sand.

It didn’t make sense, him being back here in her kitchen. Yes, it does, her mind whispered, it’s all that grief. It takes up a lot of space inside a person. Shrinks them somehow.

“Wouldn’t it be something if your flight got canceled?” she asked.

Trace shifted his weight, sipped his cocoa. “I reserved a room at The Cove,” he said. “Just in case.” https://www.5Princebooks.com/annswann.html

The Secret Room - historical Jewish fiction - 5 Star Review

1939. Vienna, Austria. Life was as close to perfect for medical doctor Johann Goetz, his artist wife Sybilla, and their three children . . . until the world went stark raving mad.

As Nazi propaganda seeps into the fibers of Vienna, families and neighbors are pitted against one another, and hatred brews until the tensions erupt on the night of Kristallnacht. But Jewish families like the Goetzs know that the madness is only beginning.

Word of the deadly program against the Jews of Europe spreads far and wide, even to the quaint Amish farm belonging to Joseph Jotter’s family in Lancaster County. The idea of neighbors hating neighbors is a foreign concept in Amish country, and Joseph finds himself asking God to show him how he can help the Jewish people of Europe.

First off, let me just say Wow! This book was amazing. I was hooked from the start. It’s a little different than what I’m used to from Sara--I love all of her books--but knowing the basis of this historical tale was plucked from our own family tree made the story even more poignant. I read it straight through in one sitting and absolutely can’t wait for the next book in the series.

CHRISTMAS ROMANCE

A CROSSBOW CHRISTMAS

Loneliness is a hard task master. Can Carina write herself a better Christmas?

You know how it is, life breaks your heart, but you survive. You work at stitching things back together and after a while it begins to seem better. Until sometime in the quiet curve of the day or in the middle stretch of a lonely night, you realize blood is still seeping. Just a little. Seeping out between the stitches. Drowning you in sorrow.

Carina read what she had written, frowned, then closed the journal. Geez. Talk about a pity party. Even my teenage journal wasn’t this bad.

Turning the page, she wrote, Dear Lord, please direct me back to my happiness. This pity stuff is pathetic.

She underlined the word pathetic three times for emphasis, then she pushed the pen into the little elastic holder on the side of the journal and stared out the picture window at the still-green grass of the front lawn.

There had been very little winter in West Texas this year. January, that’s when the freeze will hit. Maybe even February, but not December. Nope, not December. No white Christmas for us. Not in Landon.

Excerpt from the novel:

A branch cracked, a shadow moved, and panic slid between my ribs like a blade.

She stared into my headlights, one hand shielding her eyes like a sailor looking for land, and then, like a flash, she ran straight at me. Straight toward my little Honda with the window rolled down. Her hair flew out behind her and it was all so surreal that for a moment, I simply sat there, paralyzed. Then she raised her right hand above her head. In her grip, I caught a glimpse of silver.

Happy Mom's Day! FREE Ebook for Mom

Does your mom bake cookies? Create amazing Sunday dinners? Bring home the bacon while Dad holds down the fort? If your Mom is anything like mine was, she probably does a little of everything.

All For Love
My Mom was a talented seamstress who not only made all our clothes when we were kids, but also all of our Barbie's clothes. She even sewed our quilts and curtains. Of course my Dad didn't care about all that, he was more interested in the food. Mom was a wonderful cook who had supper on the table at six o'clock every night. We never ate at a restaurant unless we were on vacation.

In addition to all that, Mom also grew gorgeous roses, kept the lawn mowed, cleaned the house top to bottom, and found time to sit in front of the fireplace and read. She loved to read. One day I came home from school and found Mom asleep in front of the fireplace, feet propped up on the hearth, book open on her lap, the bottoms of her Keds melted and curled down like little frowns.

So in honor of my late Mom's love of reading, I'm giving away ebook copies of ALL FOR LOVE to the first five commenters who tell me why they love their Mom. Just be sure to leave me your email address so I can send you the book. Happy Mother's Day!

New Release - Old Amarillo - Amish Journeys #1

Sara Barnard is a mother of four, a wife, a teacher, and a wonderful storyteller. She writes historical romances, children's fiction, and Amish romances.

If you like sweet, Amish romance + a couple of historical cowboys, this is the book for you.

Better yet, it's the start of the series, Amish Journeys. (Yes, we all know how you readers love your series!)

Disillusioned and feeling there is more to life than can be found on her family's Indiana farm, atypical Amish girl Katie Knepp bucks tradition and leaves everything behind, bound for a supposed Mennonite settlement rumored to be somewhere around Old Amarillo, Texas. But the trail to Texas is a hard one, laced with disease, would-be-could-be bandits, and a drought so severe that turning back isn't an option. During her epic overland struggle, Katie discovers friendship, even in the ever-present outlaw element, a strength in herself she'd never dreamed she possessed, and those in her past who refuse to become unwilling memories. Katie's story isn't Amish, nor is it western . . . it is uniquely Texan.

A Bit of Lilac Lane

Lilac Lane is the follow up book to Stutter Creek, my bestselling Suspense novel from 5 Prince Publishing. In Lilac Lane, Ella and her ten year old son, Nick, flee their hometown of Albuquerque, NM to start a new life in a small town. Her ex-husband is in jail for abuse, and they just want to start a new life without him.

Within days they meet local wildlife biologist, Chet Boone. This is what happens after the three of them share pizza and a song together:

*
“You’re humming that Brown Eyed Girl song aren’t you?” Nick asked.
“Hmm. So I was. It’s an old song from way back. I’ve always liked it.” She pulled into the carport and engaged the Jeep’s parking brake. The pine trees were fragrant. Several branches touched the metal roof of the carport. They made a shushing sound when the wind blew. It also sent their tangy green fragrance into the Jeep’s open windows. “We may regret not having a garage when it snows this winter,” she said.
“I think he likes you,” Nick replied.
Ella stopped with her finger on the automatic window button. The windows stopped halfway up. “Chet Boone?”

Nick rolled his eyes. “No. The Incredible Hulk.”
