Trace grabbed her in a bear hug, held on for a few moments, then turned her loose and swiped the pad of his thumb around the corner of his mouth. “Tiny marshmallows?”
Laynie laughed. “Yes, little one. I have tiny marshies. You know I do.” It felt as if they had regressed ten years, as if the black cloud of now had lifted and they’d been transported back to the days of their frantic youth when the two of them would run up and down the beach like wild things.
“Penny for your thoughts, Penny Lane?”
“Penny for my thoughts?” She smiled. “I’m thinking how I never could stay mad at you. Not when we were kids, and not now. No matter what you’ve done. Or didn’t do.” She brushed past him and went to the kitchen for another cup of cocoa. The mood was too intense. Her footing as uncertain as dry sand.
It didn’t make sense, him being back here in her kitchen. Yes, it does, her mind whispered, it’s all that grief. It takes up a lot of space inside a person. Shrinks them somehow.
“Wouldn’t it be something if your flight got canceled?” she asked.
