3rd Annual Brain to Books Blog Hop

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Brain to Books Blog Hop

http://amazon.com/author/annswann
Below is an excerpt from the first book in my bestselling Stutter Creek trilogy:

from 5 Prince Publishing

Beth went in search of an old flame, but she found a serial killer instead.

Mandy was on her way to work the evening shift at the Waterhouse Bar & Grill when she spied a small boy standing beside the road, alone. She immediately decided to pull over and check on him.

This is what happened next:

The setting sun made the trees appear as black-paper cutouts in a landscape collage.
After checking her mirrors to make sure no one was behind her, Mandy pressed the button to lower the passenger-side window. It was almost all the way down when a man yanked open the door and exploded into her world like a tornado into a trailer park.  Her hand flew to the gearshift, but she couldn’t engage it.  Even as her flight instinct kicked in, part of her mind was telling her this was almost certainly the same strange guy who had requested her section at the restaurant the night before.  His eyes had seemed to follow her all around the crowded dining room, and his oily stench had made him stand out like a spot of mold on white linen.
Mandy drew in breath to scream, her hand scrambling across the console for her phone or the gearshift, whichever came first, but he was too fast.  With lightning speed, he dove across the seat and slapped a rectangle of duct tape across her mouth.
He buried his free hand knuckle deep in the thick blonde braid at the base of her skull even as his other hand slid down to her windpipe and began to squeeze.
Mandy’s fight instinct kicked in then, and she whipped her head back and forth in an effort to dislodge his hands. His stench, and the oily filth of his unkempt hair, was sickening. She clawed at his eyes, ripped at his skin, but it was no use.  The psycho laughed and simply leaned his head back out of her reach.
That’s when Mandy began to claw at her own face, attempting to scratch the silver tape off her mouth. It didn’t matter. There was no one around to hear her scream even if she could have gotten it off.
Mandy wasn’t a quitter.  She did her best to get her feet out from under the steering column to try and kick him off. But he was pressing down on her with his entire weight.
            She was trapped.
Calmly, the psycho took one hand off her throat, doubled up his fist, and hit her so hard the back of her skull struck the driver’s side window with an audible whap!
Then he went back to her throat. Mandy’s grip on reality began to loosen.  Tiny strobes flashed inside her skull.

He squeezed even harder, the tips of his fingers disappearing into her flesh.

International Author's Day Blog Hop & Giveaway!

Good morning and welcome to Ann's Afterthoughts. This is the place where I can be myself. The place where I expound on anything and everything. The place where I promote my writing and that of other authors. Today's post is sponsored by Debdatta Dasgupta Sahay, a wonderful blogger/reviewer in India.  http://www.b00kr3vi3ws.in/  For today's post I wanted to give a nod to some of my favorite authors from years past.

As a child I read a lot. I discovered Poe's short stories when I was very young--they terrified and delighted me. I also loved Ray Bradbury and Mary Stewart. Bradbury's speculative fiction and Stewart's fantasy fiction transported me to other worlds. In addition to my books, I grew up watching The Twilight Zone and Star Trek on television. It wasn't until I discovered Nathaniel Hawthorne that I came back down to earth so-to-speak. Later there was Stephen King. I could write an entire post on my love/hate relationship with his work (maybe I'll do that later, suffice it to say I've read almost everything he has published).

For now let me direct you to the remainder of the hop (see the link at the end) and to my own giveaway, a digital copy of Memories from Maple Street, Pawprints on My Heart (an anthology of true stories about beloved pets from best selling authors), OR a digital copy of Takers: Apocalypse in Eden, my latest speculative fiction novel. TO BE ENTERED IN MY GIVEAWAY, SIMPLY LEAVE ME A COMMENT WITH YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. Random.org will choose the winner on July 19th.

Banned Books Week - Giveaway Blog Hop 9/21 - 9/27

This blogpost is dedicated to bringing attention to the idea that certain books should be banned because of questionable content or language. Many books are pulled from public schools and public libraries because a few people want to impose their beliefs upon the majority of the population. I personally think that is dangerous.

I was brought up with the idea that if you CAN read it, then you MAY read it. So I read anything and everything that piqued my interest. I raised my own daughter the same way. Now here's where I may differ from others in this campaign: I don't believe the same ideas extend to other forms of entertainment such as video games and movies. Those are passive pasttimes. They don't require any brain power. That's a huge difference if you ask me.

Books make you think, and if you aren't able to read and understand the words in the book, then you probably aren't going to attempt the material. Visual media, on the other hand, doesn't require one to have a working vocabulary. Quite the contrary, images on a screen are "fed" into your brain at warp speed whether you are "mature" enough for them, or not. I think this is dangerous, too. But that's another topic.

For this post, I'll just conclude by saying that some of my favorite reads were (or still are) on the banned books list (according to the American Library Association's website). These books are:
The Grapes of Wrath
To Kill a Mockingbird
Call of the Wild
The Color Purple
Animal Farm
1984

More recent additions are the kids books, Captain Underpants, and the YA series, The Hunger Games.

I could go on an on, the list is very lengthy, but I think you get my point. Yes, there is controversy in all of these books, that's what makes them "good reads."

If you would like to win an electronic copy of any banned book, just mention that book in a comment on this blog post (along with your email address), and at the end of the week, I will let Random.org select the winner. I will then email you the electronic version of that book.
